The skincare and aesthetics industry is ever-changing, with new information constantlyemerging. This can be overwhelming forconsumers, who may struggle to discern fact from fiction. As skincare professionals, it is our responsibility to debunk myths and provide evidence-based information. Each person has unique skincare needs, so treatments and routines should be tailored accordingly.

MYTH – OILY SKIN DOES NOT NEED MOISTURISER

All skin types, including oily skin, need moisturiser. Oily skin requires hydration just like other skin types. Both water and oil are essential for the skin, and when we neglect moisturising oily skin, it can lead to overproduction of oil by the sebaceous glands. This can disrupt the skin’s balance. Using a lightweight moisturiser can help oily skin manage breakouts and prevent clogged pores. We recommend the Hydra-Cool Serum from iS Clinical. It serves as a serum and moisturiser for oily skin, and can also be used as a primer for makeup to achieve a beautiful glow.

MYTH – HOMEMADE INGREDIENTS ARE BEST FOR THE SKIN

Natural ingredients aren’t always ideal for skin. While fun to use, they can disrupt skin pH and its protective barrier, causing inflammation, sensitivity, or breakouts. Some can even be too stimulating, leading to burns. It’s crucial to address specific skin concerns, as not all ingredients suit every skin type. Combining ingredients at home may not stabilise well. Medical-grade products are regulated for safety and ingredient stability. Consult a skincare specialist for the best ingredients for your skin.

MYTH – SKINCARE PRODUCTS CAN SHRINK PORES

Pores cannot shrink, but certain ingredients can create the illusion of smaller pores by stimulating collagen production and maintaining skin health. For instance, retinoids increase collagen levels, giving skin a plumper look, and help regulate oil production, reducing breakouts. Exfoliation also plays a role in pore appearance by keeping them clean and minimising stretching. Our root4 SupernovA Oil contains a 6% Granactive retinoid in an oil base to reduce sensitivity and flaking.

MYTH – EVERYONE DOES NOT NEED SPF

SPF is essential for everyone, but the specific SPF needed varies based on individual skin types. For example, darker skin can often use SPF30, equivalent to SPF15 for fair skin. Look for “broad-spectrum SPF” to protect against UVA and UVB rays, which can cause aging and sunburns. Even indoors, devices emit blue light that can damage skin, so SPF is crucial. Reapply sunscreen, especially when outdoors. We recommend Mesoestetics Mesoprotech Melan 130 Pigment Control for comprehensive coverage.

MYTH – YOU CAN USE SOAP AS A CLEANSER

Soap isn’t suitable for facial cleansing as it can strip the skin’s protective layer, leading to tightness, dryness, or excessive oiliness. Healthy skin should feel hydrated after cleansing, not in need of immediate moisturizing or re-cleansing. Soap makes the skin alkaline, disrupting its slightly acidic balance and making it prone to sensitivity and inflammation. Opt for a facial cleanser suited to your skin type instead. We recommend iS Clinical’s Cleansing Complex, a pH-balanced cleanser.

MYTH – ACNE ONLY AFFECTS TEENAGERS

Unfortunately, acne does not only appear during your teenage years; it can develop when you are an adult as well. Acne is triggered by overactive sebaceous glands and hormones. However, acne is a condition that can be controlled with the correct treatment for your skin. We recommend our BBL Forever Clear laser to reduce inflammation, bacteria, and breakouts.

Now that we have debunked some of these common skincare myths, be sure to always do your own research or check with your skin specialist. Be cautious, especially when looking at social media trends.
