Who is a good candidate for Cosmelan?
Not all hyperpigmentation is equal. We recommend booking a comprehensive Aesthetic Consultation with one of our aesthetic skin specialists to discuss your pigment concerns and decide if Cosmelan is the correct treatment for you.
The Cosmelan peel and homecare system is effective in treating moderate to severe pigmentation issues and works to reduce the appearance of skin discoloration brought on by genetics, sun exposure, inflammation, hormonal changes, aging, exposure to chemicals, and photosensitizing medications.
What is hyperpigmentation?
Did you know that worldwide 90% of people will suffer from some form of pigmentation? It is therefore not surprising that it is one of the leading concerns among clients that visit us at Atlantic Dermatology and Laser.
Skin hyperpigmentation is caused by abnormal production of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color, and is a consequence of uncontrolled, localized overproduction of melanin by the melanocytes, causing irregular skin coloration and dark spots.
Hyperpigmentation is identified as a chronic condition because it requires ongoing professional management and has become a significant issue due to the negative psychological impact on individuals; affecting their self-confidence and quality of life.
Types of Hyperpigmentation:
Melasma:
Melasma, also known as hormonal pigmentation, is a common pigmentation disorder characterised by dark brown or grey patches primarily found on the face.
Post-inflammatory Hyperpigmentation:
Inflammation, either through damage from acne, or skin treatments such as lasers or radio frequency, can activate pigmentation post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
Sun-damage:
Sun and UV exposure will exacerbate and cause unwanted imperfections and blemishes on your skin, known as sunspots or age spots. This sun damage usually begins to show from the age of 35 onwards and is caused by years of accumulated sun exposure.
What does the Cosmelan treatment involve?
The Cosmelan method includes an in-clinic depigmenting peel application, followed by an intensive home care regime involving the application of depigmenting treatment creams for at least 6 – 9 months following the in-clinic treatment.
How to maintain the results?
Your Aesthetic Skincare Specialist will discuss these necessary changes required at your initial consultation to ensure you are equipped with all the tools to successfully manage your pigmentation. We look forward to supporting you in-clinic and virtually during every step of your exciting depigmentation journey.
