“Spending time to really listen and understand my patients’ concerns, taking a step back and looking at my patients holistically, involving my patients in every decision, no matter how big or small and above all working with care and compassion: these are the values I bring to each and every consultation.” This personalised care, in combination with a commitment to offer the latest in novel therapies using the most advanced technologies and an integrative approach is why our treatments are so effective.

DR VANESSA LAPINER

Specialist dermatologist

I was always destined to become a doctor. A deepening childhood fascination with the human body together with an upbringing emphasising social conscience all guided me towards a career in medicine. When I was awarded the Amelia Schenkman scholarship after completing high school, my destiny was sealed.  I completed my Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree at the University of Cape Town in 2004, graduating with first class honours and distinction and being awarded Golden Keys National Honours. I went on to achieve a Master of Science in Medicine in Cell Biology in 2009 and graduated with distinction in recognition of my work on pigment cell disorders. I then completed my dermatology training at Groote Schuur Hospital graduating summa cum laude as a Fellow of the College of Dermatologists of South Africa in 2010. For this I was awarded the Peter Gordon-Smith award for clinical excellence. Following my completion of training, I retained my connection to the Department of Dermatology at Groote Schuur Hospital, offering my experience in their outpatient clinics as well as in dermatopathology meetings and in the training of medical students and dermatology registrars. I have presented in both local and international congresses and am a published author in medical journals. Professional affiliations include membership in the Dermatological Society of South Africa (DSSA), the South African Dermatologic Surgery Society (SASDS) and the Vitiligo Society of South Africa (VSSA). I have also been actively involved in the CANSA Sun Smart Screening initiative and in dermatology outreach programmes to Umtata.

Our practice philosophy “Guided by Research; Enhanced by Intuition” has shaped my practice of dermatology since we opened our doors in 2011. As the Director and founder of Atlantic Dermatology and Laser, I strive to ensure that we are able to offer the latest up-to-date treatments from across the medical sphere conducted in a serene and discrete environment. Our commitment to care and individualized focus translates into not only the attention you will receive from the moment you walk into our reception to make you feel comfortable, but also the unhurried and meticulous care during your consultation and even follow-up phone calls after your treatments. At Atlantic Dermatology and Laser, it is all about building relationships and trust. It is my mission for every patient to leave my practice not only with a comprehensive treatment plan but armed also with information, empowerment and a clear understanding of future preventative measures.

I enjoy practising the full spectrum of dermatology from acne and eczema to more complex cases requiring interdisciplinary care. From a decade worth of training in dermoscopy I am skilled in the field of Mole Mapping and for better or worse, our South African climate has honed my skills in the diagnosis and treatment of hundreds of malignant tumours. I strive always to live up to my reputation of mastering the full spectrum of dermatology in a kind, warm and thoughtful manner and to continue to blend science and a genuine desire to make a difference in a constant pursuit for excellence.

“For in truth, great Love is born of great Knowledge of the Thing loved” (Da Vinci).

In all aspects of my life, both personal and professional; as a wife, mother, doctor, scientist and published poet, this resonates deeply. Dermatology is, and always has been, an all-consuming love affair. When not at the practice, I can be found with my other loves: my husband, four children, our two Cavalier King Charles spaniels, our kitten and two goldfish. My all-time favourite pastime is curling up on a couch with a good book and a hot cup of tea. A much under-appreciated talent of mine is how I can conduct a wardrobe change and kick off my heels at the end of the day to jump headfirst into whatever adventures my children lead me to with a speed which would make Clark Kent’s head spin.
