We cannot run from age, or the ageing process, we can however intervene, prevent and slow the process of ageing down.

When it comes to wrinkles there are so many methods available to prevent, treat and reduce the signs of ageing. This article is going to focus on a few options. We all know Botox and Fillers are quick fixes, however, I always encourage my patients to improve their own cell production first, improve your texture and encourage your own skin to prevent, maintain and restore cell health and function.

The epidermis – the outer part of the skin contains skin cells, pigment, and proteins.

The Dermis – the middle part of the skin contains skin cells, blood vessels, nerves, hair follicles, and oil glands. The dermis provides nutrients to the epidermis.

The subcutaneous layer – The inner layer under the dermis contains sweat glands, some hair follicles, blood vessels, and fat.

Each layer also contains connective tissue with collagen fibres to give support and elastin fibres to provide flexibility and strength to the skin. Skin changes are related to many factors, some of which are environmental factors, genetic makeup and nutrition. The greatest single factor of ageing is sun exposure. You can see this by comparing areas of your body that have regular sun exposure with areas that are protected from the sun.

As we age, the epidermis becomes thinner, even though the number of cell layers remains unchanged. The number of pigment-containing cells called melanocytes may decrease, and pigmented spots including age spots may appear in sun-exposed areas. The medical term for these sunspots are lentigos.

These are some reasons for ageing skin, now let us take a look at how we can prevent, treat, and maintain our signs of ageing through treatments.

Tytebrite: This is a marvellous combination laser treatment where we do BBL (Broadband light) and Skintyte together.

BBL is used to stimulate cell production, while targeting red and brown pigment in the skin, this reduces the signs of sun damage, age spots, redness and the illusion shadows of uneven skin tone may cause to add the aged look.

Skintyte is a treatment where we gradually heat the skin, this is used to stimulate collagen and strengthen your elastin.

Skin Needling / Laser Resurfacing: Resurfacing the skin can be mild, moderate or severe, the deeper the treatment, the longer the downtime would be. What do we mean by downtime? Downtime is the healing phase of the skin after the treatment, this phase is generally 5 days for mild resurfacing treatments like skin needling or chemical peels, and 14 to 21 days for moderate to deep or full resurfacing treatments like the Tunable Resurfacing Laser (TRL) at Atlantic Dermatology and Laser. This Tunable Resurfacing Laser is considered the gold standard for non-surgical skin rejuvenation treatment and is the latest advancement in deep wrinkle reduction.

For as long as I can remember I have always had a passion for the Skincare and Aesthetic industry. Looking through childhood memories;

I was around 5 when my older cousin complained about back pains. Little as I was, I could climb onto his back then gently proceed to either walk or massage his muscle tension away. I subsequently found myself doing mini Mani’s, Pedi’s and several home remedy facials by the time I was 12.

My family loved having a little skin and body inspector around to pamper, educate, and consistently practise new techniques on them.

Being so young, I had yet to discover the wonder of laser treatments. Despite not being exposed to the real aesthetic industry, as I got older my growing passion for aesthetics led me to do research and read books on the topic.
